Govt issues 67% more tax refunds this year: How to check ITR refund status


The income tax department has issued income tax refunds amounting to about Rs 2.15 lakh crore between April 1, 2022 and November 30,2022. This is about 66.92% higher than the refunds during the same period in preceding year, according to the latest tweet by the income tax department.

After submitting your income tax return (ITR) for the relevant year, you may be eligible for an income tax refund if you paid more in taxes than your actual tax obligation. However, you won’t get this income tax refund until the ITR has processed your ITR and confirmed it by notification.

How to check refund status

Step 1: Login to e-Filing website with User ID, Password, Date of Birth and Captcha.

Step 2: Go to My Account and click on “Refund/Demand Status”.

Step 3: Below details would be displayed.

  • Assessment Year
  • Status
  • Reason (For Refund Failure if any)
  • Mode of Payment is displayed.

Step 4: Taxpayer can now view Refund/ Demand Status.

How to request for refund re-issue (in case of refund failure)?

Refund shall be issued to the pre-validated bank account only. In case of refund failure, taxpayer can raise the service request in e-Filing portal upon receiving communication from CPC.

Perform the following steps to raise Refund Re-issue Request:

Step 1: Logon to ‘e-Filing’ Portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/?

Ste 2:Click on ‘My Account’ menu and click ‘Service Request’ link.

Step 3: Select the ‘Request Type’ as ‘New Request’ and Select the ‘Request Category’ as ‘Refund Reissue’. Click ‘Submit’.

Sttep 4: Details such as PAN, Return Type, Assessment Year (A.Y), Acknowledgement No, Communication Reference Number, Reason for Refund Failure and Response are displayed.

Step 5: Click ‘Submit’ hyperlink located under ‘Response’column. All the prevalidated bank accounts with status validated/validated and EVC enabled will be displayed.

Step 6: Select the bank account to which the tax refund is to be credited and click ‘Continue’.

Step 7: If the prevalidation of the account is unsuccessful, CPC will inform the taxpayer of this. The taxpayer must resubmit the request for prevalidation of the bank account and refund reissue.

Step 8: Click “Ok” in the popup. select the appropriate e-Verification mode, To continue with the request submission, generate and submit an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) or an Aadhaar OTP as necessary..

A success message will be displayed confirming the Refund Re-issue request submission
